The Molten Salt Reactor is one of the Generation-IV designs excelling in the field of safety and sustainability. Many of the principles needed for the successful development and operation of the MSR have been demonstrated by the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment in the 1960’s. Meanwhile new designs evolved ranging from thermal breeder reactors similar to the original designs to molten salt reactors with an intermediate or fast neutron spectrum capable of breeding and/or actinide transmutation.
